We’ve all heard about the wonders of Nainital, but very few
of us know about its close cousin Pangot, which is a hidden gem of Uttarakhand.
As a traveler who has been to both places, I would recommend keeping Pangot on
your list if you’re planning a visit to Nainital.
While there is no denying the fact that Nainital is
beautiful, there is a lot of it that has been modified for the sake of tourism.
As a nature lover, nothing gives me more joy than marvelling at Mother Nature’s
beauty in its pristine condition, and Pangot is the epitome of unadulterated
ethereal beauty. If you are a nature lover like me, this beautiful hamlet
should be on your list just for this reason alone.
2 . It’s quieter
The reason you visit a hill station is to escape the chaotic
crowds of cities and spend some time in the lap of nature peacefully, but your
entire trip can get ruined if you keep finding the same crowd everywhere you
go. Unfortunately, most mainstream hill stations are overcrowded these days.
This is where Pangot comes in. This place is so quiet and calm, time stands
still here. Gurgling of brooks and chirping of birds are the only disturbances
you’ll find here.
3. It’s a birding paradise
Pangot is home to a plethora of rare and endemic Himalayan
species such as the Cheer Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Slaty-backed Forktail and
Rufous-bellied Woodpecker to name a few. It is therefore, an ideal destination
for serious birders as well. The Oak and Pine trees that cover the land serve
as ideal nesting grounds for these birds. Jungle Lore Birding Lodge is the most
renowned eco lodge in Pangot that specialises in organizing birding excursions
to the major hotspots in the area and their well trained naturalist guides can
help you find your target species.
4. It’s perfect for trekking
There are plenty of nature trails in Pangot that are adorned
with jaw dropping views. The trek to Cheena Peak via Kilbury is one of the most
rewarding treks in the area. The wind whispers against your face and the forest
path opens up before you. Rustling of leaves in the trees, the smell of grass,
the warmth of Sun’s rays and the chirping of birds make you feel one with the
nature.
5. It gives you an opportunity to discover Kumaoni culture.
Pangot is the perfect destination for cultural buffs. Here,
you get the opportunity to meet and interact with the local folk and learn
their customs and traditions. There are some eco lodges and homestays in the
region run by the locals, and if luxury isn’t your first priority you should
consider staying in these lodges to enjoy authentic Kumaoni culture and
