My Holiday in Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve

Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park in order to preserve endangered tigers and their habitat,
Corbett National Park is India’s oldest national park. In the early 70s, the forest was converted into the first national park to come under the Project Tiger initiative.
Bird Watchers can sight over 300 species of birds on this trip. Corbett tiger reserve offers excellent wildlife
tiger sightings and apart from tigers, one can expect to see Asian Elephants, Leopard, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Indian Muntjac and more

On our recent Corbett wildlife trip this winter we had the amazingly lucky experience of observing a tigress in the dense nature at Corbett, as well as experiencing the company of the tender giant, the Asian Elephant, as well as some amazing birding with sightings like Tawny and Brown Fish Owls, Bristled Grassbird, and many more.

Tiger Camp is a lovely resort and has the advantage of being ideally placed between
the Corbett National Park, the Kosi River, the enclosing hilly forests that appear spectacular and have great views.
Corbett Forest has a myriad of different landscapes – hills, rivers, lakes, marshy areas, grasslands, and dense forest.
This variety of habitats offers you a wide assortment of animals, including Tiger, Asian Elephant, Sloth Bear,

Indian Muntjac, Yellow-throated Martens, and many more.

A Himalayan Birding Tour – with Munsiyari

Earlier this year in March, I went birdwatching to Munsiyari with my wife also a birdwatcher. I was so much settled in this quaint and serene place that I strongly recommend my fellow birdwatchers not to miss this exotic hill station. I am going to provide all the important info you should know before you pack your bags.

pictures courtesy Ms. Jainy Maria

Why Munsiyari for Birdwatching?
Located in the far-reached and off-the-beaten-track part of the state of Uttarakhand, Munsiyari is the quaint hill station. It offers the serene views of five Himalayan sister peaks where you can visit by road.

Munsiyari is the best destination to have fruitful birding experience and get a break from the crowd. You can start the tour from Delhi to the best Himalayan birding spots in Pangot and Sattal several beautiful Himalayan treks here and great sightings of Migratory birds. Even if you are not habitual to walking, there are different treks with various difficulty levels some very easy and elderly-friendly. We chose to travel with Asian Adventures India’s oldest and largest ground handlers for birdwatching tours and stayed at their birding Lodge the Jungle Lore Birding Lodge. We were recommended to cover Munsiyari Vijaypur and Ranikhet. Munsiyari filled us with Awe.

Also known as “Little Kashmir”, Munsiyari is located in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. At the altitude of 7590 ft, Munsiyari is truly an offbeat place with serene views of snow-capped mountains. We researched and found the Himalayan Monal, Satyr Tragopan,  Fire Breasted flowerpecker, Bearded Vulturethe endangered White-Throated Tit, Himalayan Cutia, Red-headed Bullfinch, Pied Thrush, Green-tailed Sunbird, Snowy Browed Flycatcher, Golden eagles, Grey-bellied Tesia and many more.

Weather in Munsiyari a
In Munsiyari, the weather remains almost pleasant all year round. During summers, the weather is a delight. In fall and spring, you can expect soothing evenings and mornings. There are chills in winter as it gets snowfall. The temperature is very delightful and pleasant.  In summer months, expect up to 25 degrees Celsius. The winter remains coldest with -5 to -10 degrees Celsius.

How to Get There?
Munsiyari is located around 560 km from Delhi. If you want to get there by road, I would recommend spending a few nights at Pangot-Nainital or Kumaon and then to Chaukori or Binsar. Then on the third day, you can reach Munsiyari. Basically, it takes around 2 days to reach Munsiyari from Delhi.

By Air
Nainital’s Pantnagar Airport is the closest airport to this hill station. You can get there by taxi. To save money, reach Almora by taxi and take a shared taxi or bus to Munsiyari.

By Train
Kathgodam is the closest railway station, i.e. 278 km away. Kathgodam is well known as an entryway to the Kumaon region. There are only two trains from old Delhi to Kathgodam which run every day and take around 7 hours of travel time. But I would suggest you book your tickets in Kathgodam Shatabdi, which is the fastest train. It takes only around 5 hours to reach from New Delhi.

From Kathgodam, you can easily hop on regular buses for Pithoragarh or Almora. You can also book a taxi or get a shared jeep to Munsiyari from there.

You can also plan a road trip on your car or bike from Delhi. Keep in mind that it would take two days and there are no direct buses. A shared taxi would be the best option to save on costs.

Birding Tour of Rajasthan & Gujarat

Much of Rajasthan and Gujarat may seem dry, and they may not seem to be ideal places for bird watching tours. But a deeper look will prove you wrong. Much of the wildlife here is uniquely adapted to these habitats, making them some of the rarest birds and animals in the Indian subcontinent.

However, this specialization of these creatures is proving to be to be their undoing. With the growing need for farmland and water, as well as urban and rural development, and the inability for these birds to adapt outside their fragile environment, it is up to the fantastic conservation efforts being carried out here, along with constant monitoring, to help save these species.

On this special tour, we will not only get to see and photograph the unique arid-climate species of India, in Gujarat’s Sasan Gir Forest and also learn about how they and their fragile habitats can be saved. The best birding lodge in Gir is the Gir Birding Lodge. Located right beside the Gate to the forest is the wildlife specialty lodge to stay in while in Gir.

Birdwatching In Ladakh and Kashmir

Kashmir and Ladakh lie at the northern extreme of Indian Subcontinent and in terms of birding, as well as culture, offer a stark contrast to the rest of the country.

Their position means that, particularly in winter and during migration, birds from the northern Palearctic turn up as vagrants, and there are a number of sightings of species not recorded elsewhere in India due to the high elevation here.

Despite their stunning beauty, these high-altitude habitats of the Himalayas, and their denizens, are under threat, with developmental projects, expansion of agriculture, and changing weather patterns playing a major part. It is sensitive habitats like those here that require constant monitoring, as do the populations of the birds and animals calling this area home.

This Ladakh birdingtour aims at learning about, as well as contributing towards, the monitoring efforts being carried out here.

Taj Mahal Agra – Know the History, Architecture and Other Info

On our North India tour specially designed for the elderly, we will visit Agra on route to Bharatpur. Our guests will get a lovely experience at the Taj and you will know why it is lovingly called “Wah Taj”. It is a lifetime experience.  This ancient monument still shines like new even after 400 years since it was first built. It is beautifully described as “The embodiment of all things pure” by Rudyard Kipling. This masterpiece truly echoes its glory and beauty as a true reflection of romantic poetry. It attracts millions of tourists from all parts of the world each year and leaves them in awe with its endless beauty.

History
Our experienced guide will take you on a tour of the monument ‘The Taj mahal’ which was built by Shah Jahan, a Mughal ruler, in the loving memory of Mumtaz Mahal, his wife. While giving birth to a 14th child, his wife died in 1631. She was the third wife of Shah Jahan and he was madly in love with her. The emperor got so depressed by her death that his hair turned grey in one night. The construction of the Taj started in 1632 and the whole monument was built in its existing form in 1653. Unfortunately, his son Aurangzeb jailed him in Agra Fort soon after he built the Taj, where he lived the rest of his life. In 1666, Shah Jahan died and buried along with Mumtaz in the Taj.

In 1983, the Taj Mahal has declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and became the “Jewel of Muslim architecture in India and one of the most admired masterpieces in the world”. It took over 20000 artisans from different parts of Central India, India and Europe to build this masterpiece.

 The Architecture
The Mughal Charbagh outside the Taj is an ornamental garden. The elevated marble platform is built on the northern part of the complex where mausoleum stands. This white minaret is 40m high which really adorns each corner of the platform.

The ornate structure is made of white marble at the main entrance. The arches have beautiful walls and ceilings with geometrical patterns. There are two red sandstone complexes.

Quick Facts
It took over 1000 elephants to transport construction materials to build the Taj.
There are 28 different varieties of semi-precious and precious stones used on the inlay work of marble
The white marble was ordered from Makrana, Rajasthan, jasper from Punjab, the crystal and jade from China, turquoise from Tibet, carnelian from Arabia, Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan, and sapphire from Sri Lanka

Entry Gates and Timings
Main Gate (Western Side) – Entry starts an hour before the sun rises until 45 minutes before sunset
Eastern Gate – Same as Western Gate
Southern Gate – Exit only.

Note – Taj Mahal doesn’t open on Fridays. The monument allows entry of both Indians and foreigners on all days of the week.

Birdwatching tour to Eaglenest And Kaziranga

Northeast India is one of the most bird-rich regions in the world. The dense forests are not only home to various species of skulking babblers and similarly-plumaged warblers, but also beautiful pheasants and other stunners such as Fire-tailed Myzornis, Himalayan Cutia, Beautiful Nuthatch, Ward’s Trogon, and the recently discovered Bugun Liocichla.

However, these forests are also under continuous threats, ranging from developmental projects and deforestation to tribal hunting.

Not all the news is bad though. From community conservation projects, aimed at changing local views towards wildlife, to more traditional conservation methods, the conservation action being carried out here is some of the most unique, and has even led to several success stories.

This Bubo Birdwatching tour to Eaglenest & Kaziranga lead by Senior Birder Mike Prince and Asian Adventures aims at not only enjoying the unique wildlife of the region, but also learn about the changes being brought about here, and the heroes bringing this change about.
