Kashmir and Ladakh lie at the northern extreme of Indian
Subcontinent and in terms of birding, as well as culture, offer a stark
contrast to the rest of the country.
Their position means
that, particularly in winter and during migration, birds from the northern
Palearctic turn up as vagrants, and there are a number of sightings of species
not recorded elsewhere in India due to the high elevation here.
Despite their stunning beauty, these high-altitude habitats
of the Himalayas, and their denizens, are under threat, with developmental
projects, expansion of agriculture, and changing weather patterns playing a
major part. It is sensitive habitats like those here that require constant
monitoring, as do the populations of the birds and animals calling this area
home.
This Ladakh birdingtour aims at learning about, as well as contributing towards, the monitoring
efforts being carried out here.
