Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is one of the
natural habitats of orangutans in Borneo where you can get a special
experience. This sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Sandakan, the second
largest city of Sabah. It attracts animal lovers from different parts of the
world. Asian Adventures India is running tours to Borneo which will happen
every year. Go for set departures or ask us for tailor-made ones Here you can
explore the endangered primates during two of the feeding times scheduled on

Located on the equatorial rainforest reserve stretched over
43 sq. km, the rehab center is based on preserving the endangered species of
orangutans here. They are free to roam around. There are no enclosures or cages
and you can follow the marked pathways to several viewing landmarks at the
front of the reserve.
About Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was opened in
1964 as part of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which is stretched over 4300
hectares to serve baby orangutans that had been abandoned. Since then, the
shelter served as a sanctuary for orangutans that have been injured, orphaned,
kept as pets, or rescued from smugglers. The caretakers here are used to take
care of these creatures with love and train survival techniques to all kinds of
monkeys here. The main goal of this reserve is to rehab the orangutans. It is
well regarded for the protection of endangered species and to give a message to
support them.
What to Expect when visiting there?
After buying the entry ticket, you will have a safe where
you can keep your belongings safe for free. A monkey is quite curious
sometimes, especially when they see a backpack filled with eatables. You cannot
even carry sunscreen and insect spray as it can harm monkeys and other animals.
You can use sunscreen and insect spray before going inside the reserve.
When you get in, you can watch an introductory movie where
you can get a brief info about the purpose of a rehab center. The movie takes
up to 30 minutes and runs several times a day. Then you will walk through the
viewing platform on a boardwalk that crosses the rainforest. While walking, you
might witness the youngest orangutans in the sanctuary. You can witness young
orangutans behind a glass wall playing on a vast playground.
